Scuttlebutt

One long slow pull from the glass of life
Sentimental journeys mingled with peat and ice
One long meandering stream harbouring fish of infinite scale
Their intellect escapes us as we dream the dreams of elephants
Old eyes locked in banana trees of mammoth proportion

Escaping the heat in hunter's caps and overcoats
While trolling for walleye in the noon day sun
Self assured, just off the bus from Omaha,
Our mutual friend arrives with sandwiches and beer
Which are dispatched post haste
Amidst the rising tide of poetry and baseball
